Long-line, softly fitted, and cut to flow rather than to hold a shape. The maxi is the easiest formal piece to wear for a full evening, which is why it is a common choice for engagements and for guests who want to be dressed properly without being in a bridal silhouette.
It takes flowing fabrics well — chiffon, organza, silk and light net. The fall is the feature, so the construction underneath stays deliberately minimal; there is little internal structure to fight the drape.
Work tends to sit at the neckline, the sleeves and the hem, with a quieter field between. That keeps the weight low and even, and it keeps the line the garment is built around from being broken up.
